BnB: The possibility of Bill and Quinn?

BnB QuillThere are about half a million things I would have expected to happen before seeing Bill and Quinn together.  Before believing this pairing was even possible?  I would have quit my job and bought a beach house in Malibu – all on the promise of soon purchasing my winning super lottery ticket.  My first thought, as a Quinn fan, is sheer revulsion!  Why?  Quinn, as written, could do so much better than Bill on her worst days… SO much better.  Bill is tainted by his callous disregard for other people.  He seems so  uncaring and one dimensional that it literally pains me to watch him onscreen -not figuratively, I mean literally.  Friends, like love, your soaps aren’t supposed to hurt!  He meets the very definition of the stereotypical powerful man who is unethical and filled avarice, to the point of being able to sell his mother (or child’s happiness) for a buck.

The more I thought about the possibility, the more I almost like it. (As you read that, I hope you put the emphasis on almost because I don’t trust anything to do with Bill Spencer, yet.)  Given the fact that Bill and Quinn have a tendency to go to dark places, for different reasons, of course, a lot of interesting things could happen on this show.

What would make the difference in a Quill pairing that we didn’t see with Katie or Brooke?  Quinn is written as a woman strong enough to tame that beast.  Quinn doesn’t back down. She is never fearful.  She is Bill’s alter ego, his very scarily tough and much  smarter alter ego. If Bill yells, Quinn is the woman who will yell right back and back him into a corner.   I do believe that there are lines Quinn won’t cross – which is how she differs from Bill.  Even though I fully expected her to know a goon she could call on a moment’s notice to give Liam a good beat down, leaving him naked and amnesic on a beach somewhere, I was surprised that her seemingly menacing phone call was only a call to Ally to have her put on her Saturday Night best and go out to meet Liam for dinner.  Quinn is a study in contradictions and I appreciate the fact that the writers keep giving her layers and, consequently, depth.

I have been living to see Bill bend to the will of a strong woman, rather than choosing women who won’t fight back.  Katie stood up to him more than anyone, but even she relented and accepted that Bill “is who he is”. Not.Good.Enough.  Brooke pretty much gave Bill anything he wanted.  He calls those things love and it reads, to me at least, as love of self and one’s on selfish needs.  I would like to know what the writers would do differently with Bill in the presence of a woman who has as strong a personality as his own.  I don’t want the writers to break his spirit, just his massive ego and his inability to have a real connection to anyone.   It’s been easy for me to not cheer on Bill on with anyone because all of his pairings have left the women he’s been with as bit players in their own lives (Steffy included).

BnB Rick Sneers at WyattWhat if he does get back together with Quinn and she decides she wants controlling interest in FC so that she and Wyatt not only have their jewelry line, but a secure place in FC?  (For Wyatt – to keep him close to Hope because there is no way she is going to stop manipulating that poor kid’s life)  What if Bill agrees to help her, but not for Wyatt’s sake?  He’s still angry at Brooke for not loving him as he’d hoped ignoring his own role in losing his family.  His attack on FC is directed at Brooke for breaking his heart, and at Ridge for being the man Brooke has always loved more than any other.

To the rescue?  Rick! I’ll be honest, when Rick stared Wyatt down and threatened to destroy him over the PR stunt, I had to change my clothes. I won’t tell you why, because I’ve already shared too much.  Let’s just say that I don’t want to meet reel life Rick Forrester in a heavily produced  perfectly dimmed dark alley way!  No ma’am, no sir, that’s not for me, but that scene helped me remember just how vicious a guy Rick can be, when pushed (and makes me recall Jacob Young’s seamlessly perfect portrayal of cutthroat scheming mogul, JR Chandler,  on All My Children).  Rick has fought back challenges from Ridge in the past, and most recently from Thorne and Thomas.  It’s time for Forrester Creations to take on a real challenger, another cutthroat like Bill, without resolving things on the runway.  Imagine the tensions and tests of loyalty between Caroline and Rick, Hope and Wyatt, Katie and Ridge, Katie and Karen, Brooke and Ridge, Ally and Wyatt, Thorne and His family (if Quinn and Bill promise him a permanent role as FC President), so many opttions!

Soapgods, if you’re listening, Rick Forrester is all grown up now.  He’s ready for the role of a man casting his own shadow instead of living in the shadow of his father and brothers.  If Bill makes a move on FC, let Rick make a move on whatever wealth Bill has, and any remaining stock he has in Spencer.  Give us Dallas in the daytime!  It’s time for Rick to leave FC for Ridge and Thorne to fight over — if Thorne ever comes back from Paris.  On a side note, does anyone think that Winsor Harmon (Thorne) might be away promoting the incredible looking Cathedral Canyon?

Ridge and Katie
I am torn between thinking that Liam completely shamed Katie into walking away or that he reminded Katie of who she really is at heart.   Well, break my heart, why don’t you? I, for one, don’t expect the Brooke-Ridge marriage to happen.  Sooner or later Ridge will remember his feelings for Katie.  Katie will never forget her feelings for Ridge.  If it does happen, I don’t expect them to cheat while Ridge and Brooke are together – and it would be disappointing if they did.  If they cheat, I’ll be the hypocrite I hate being and forgive them, but I hope they wait because I don’t see Ridge and Brooke being long term and I think the two have already built something that can wait and could last long term.  I would love for Ridge to walk away from a possible marriage to Brooke if his heart isn’t in it and go back to Katie.

Admittedly there is a part of me that wanted Katie to avoid the hand wringing and tears. Without thought of revenge her sister or care for another person a small part of me – the part that has a hard time delaying gratification, wants the writers to skip the long and slow romance and have Katie throw caution to the wind and (in my best Bill Spencer voice) make Ridge her bitch!  Sure, true love and all that, but Katie needs to just be swept up in something wild and uncontrollable and FUN!  Katie has been hurting for SO long that I want to see her happy, now!  She risked her life to have a child, she battled mental illness,  she lost her husband to her sister, she was betrayed by the husband she was willing to forgive. Reel life has not been kind to Katie the last several years.

So what am I saying here?  Did I just confuse you?  This storyline has caught me off guard and left me confused as well.  In short, I don’t want Katie at odds with Brooke. I would love for the sisters to reunite and be stronger than ever.  That aside, I will take Ridge and Katie in whatever form I get them, and I will ignore that selfish part of me that wants them fast, wants them now, and I am willing to watch the romance unfold, if it’s in the cards for them!  Maybe this time, Broke will step aside, and allow her sister to have the happiness that has been denied to her for so very long.

BnB: Why the Bold (and daytime) needs Hope and Wyatt

BnB Hott2Before the deluge of smack down emails begin, just let me tell you what the title of this blog entry is NOT suggesting:   I am not suggesting that Hope and Wyatt will save daytime, the BnB, Kittens stuck in trees, shoes tossed carelessly over electrical wires or the sun from burning out in another 6 billion years.

There. Done. Said it.

Then why is HOTT so important?  Here goes.  This couple adds balance and daytime, in general, has lost the art of telling a balanced story.  In a panicked and desperate ploy to win new fans, soaps became wilder than necessary and sadly disjointed: multiple returns from the dead in new faces and old faces, supernatural storylines, unaborted children, crossovers that didn’t work, dumping damn near a full cast to replace them with characters long term fans didn’t know or care about.

In that manic phase, more soaps were lost.   The shows no longer with us were those, in my opinion, that strayed too far from the long term soap audience. They were unrecognizable.  Of those that have survived, only the Bold and the Beautiful seems to have decided to build a new supercouple from the ground up.  It’s not that fans really want something new.  Fans seem to want what they once had,  just told  in a new way.  I see that in Hope and Wyatt.

Balance: Hope and Wyatt start with a clean slate

Unlike Hope and Liam, Hope and Wyatt have no notable old lovers, broken hearts, or hurt feelings based on infidelity (or near infidelity) to rip them apart.  In a prior blog I wrote and stand by the statement that:

Hope, for the first time in a long time laughed, she did it without looking over her shoulder, or out of the corner of her eyes for the shadow that was always hovering around her.  She smiled, without a hit of irony or using her smile as a means of putting on a brave face.  She embraced a man without checking for the scent of another woman,  or hairs there weren’t his.  She looked into his eyes and didn’t see the reflection of someone else.

When Wyatt looks at Hope, he sees HOPE, he loves HOPE, his desire is for HOPE.  Not having sex with Hope doesn’t make her a child in his eyes.  Not having sex with her doesn’t make other women more desirable to him.  He has a passion for Hope that I find to be kind, gentle and refreshing.

With all of the meet-cute and play-cute scenes they’ve pulled off, who knew that they could also pull off a smoking #HOTT love scene? I don’t know about you, but I blushed a little.  It was nice watching that scene, knowing that the moment we witnessed was about Hope and Wyatt, and no on else. This couple will have other challenges – the Hope Diamond issue, for example, for now at least.

Balance: Hope and Wyatt don’t have to hurt each other or betray others to be together

It’s nice to have a couple that doesn’t have to sneak around, or worry about facing the partner they’re betraying just to be together. Unlike Liam, Hope broke things off, first, before moving on.  As much as I despise Brooke and Bill together, what made them an even worse (er, sleazier) choice of couple is that they had to  hide out at home to avoid the negative press. Hope and Wyatt remind me of the old Brooke and Ridge, who stood in front of cameras together and were celebrated for the love they shared.

This relationship is a step up for Hope, who felt she had to sacrifice her principles (and virginity) to keep Liam interested in her.  Hope had publicly proclaimed her desire to maintain her virginity until marriage.  Rather than applaud it and support her, she was taunted by Steffy, dismissed by Bill, and treated as if she offered Liam nothing but regret and frustration. No hiding in the shadows for Hope and Wyatt.

Sex is the icing on the cake.  The cake is the friendship they established before sex.  Wyatt, as written, loved her without ever touching her.   I may sound like my own grandmother (God love her) but how often are daytime shows giving us romance with clothes on these days?

Balance:  Long chases, Longer embraces

As Katie and Brooke battle it out regarding Brooke’s ability to easily fall in and out of love, watching Wyatt and Hope, I realize how much I have missed the chase in a romantic storyline.  If feels as if Wyatt and Hope have known each other forever, and that the relationship between them has grown organically.

I have missed the passion that grows and grows until the time is right for BOTH partners.

I have missed the definition of romance that has nothing to do with what a woman gives, what she wears, what tricks she’ll perform (Steffy) to make a man happy.

I have missed the definition of romance in daytime that includes allowing both partners to be accomplished and have an equal voice, not a romance that feeds the ego of her partner and requires her to excuse his actions, even if those actions include him inflicting immeasurable pain on those she loves (Brooke and Bill).

I have missed the definition of romance that allows the female romantic lead to just be a happy person. She embraces her life and is not a femme fatale on a mission to destroy the woman involved with the man she’s obsessed with (Caroline and Rick!  Sorry, but I have yet to let go of the comments Caroline made to Maya.  I was never a Rick-Maya fan, but Caroline hit below the belt, raised it and hit some more).

I didn’t know just how much I missed those things until HOTT came along.  I don’t think it’s true that a happy couple is a boring one.  Good writers make happy couples interesting in ways that have nothing to do with infidelity.  Given the course of this  couple has taken, starting out, I hope they’re among that group of supercouples who bring love and adventure to a show. I hope the writers will leave the circus worthy romances to the rest of BnB’s partner swappers!

BnB: The measure of a woman. The mismeasure of a girl.

Done, Finito, KAPUT!  I’m done trying to find a reason to like the BnB’s Steffy Forrester, DONE!  I usually love bad girls/bad boys in daytime;  although I almost always root against them.  I enjoy watching them unleash fresh hell on others, and later themselves as their plans backfire.  It’s the best of both worlds.  Truly great bad girl/guy characters feed your light and dark sides.  Most daytime writers have a tried and true formula and “get” what makes bad girl/boy characters so much fun.  They’re equal parts exhilaration and exasperation and just when you think you can’t love-to- hate them any more than you already do, the writers pull a twist.  The character you thought you knew, the character whose all-knowing smirks drove you to the brink of distraction suddenly has a vulnerable side.   You find yourself almostliking them!  When daytime writers want you to fall for a character, they know what it takes to make you fall hard:

  • AMC’s writers pulled the ’empathy card’ on Janet-from-another-planet Green when they revealed that she wasn’t simply pathologically jealous of her beautiful sister, Natalie Marlowe, but that she’d been the target of unrelenting taunting and teasing, merciless emotional abuse, all without remorse by a mother who felt justified in the emotional torture of her daughter.  Natalie was her blessing, Janet was her curse. Wilma Marlowe couldn’t wait to remind Janet, every day of her life, that she was the daughter she would have done without and when given the choice, that choice would always be the beloved Natalie.  Janet’s hope was to, just once, be chosen first.  The desire to be someone’s first choice – even Trevor Dillon’s, drove much of Janet’s continued march toward madness. 
  • ATWT’s  writers pulled the ’empathy card’ with Emily Stewart, who spent years dealing with her mother Susan’s substance abuse and emotional distancing.  Emily’s victimization at her mother’s hands turned into a worldview in which she was always the victim of the those around her – even as she drew first blood.  By soapgod, she was going to make the world PAY!    ATWT pulled the double whammy with heartless schemer, Angel Lange, who was the victim of longterm sexual abuse at the hands of her wealthy powerful father.  Angel’s scheming was directed at helping her secure her freedom from a powerful father who seemed unstoppable.   To that end she forced Holden Snyder into marriage, schemed to keep him, and with her brother, stole millions from their father’s company.
  • GH’s Stefan Cassadine’s ’empathy card’ came in the form of dysfunctional parenting as well.  He and brother Stavros were presented as the “Heir and a Spare”. While his parents groomed his brother for greatness (and you can read that as great darkness), he was expected to bask in the shaded glory of the pathological Stavros, accept the cast off crumbs of his parents’ affections.  It was a wonder that they allowed him to keep the Cassadine name.  Stavros was dangerous, but even Stavros was a kitten compared to their parents.   

Stefan never stood a chance growing up.  If it’s possible to assign behavior to soap characters, you could imagine that had Stefan’s parents paid more attention to him in his youth, there would be no need to discuss adult Stefan.  He’d have never nade it to adulthood.  

  • Long before Stefan, there was Bobbie Spencer, who curiously enough became Stefan’s wife.  In her youth,  Bobbie hadn’t met a man she didn’t want to control, nor a woman she didn’t want to destroy to have him.   We later learned that Nurse Bobbie’s early  trauma occurred when she was led into prostitution as a young teen by her Aunt Ruby, not long  after her parents died.  She was just another of the working girls  in Aunt Ruby’s house.   Bobbie’s “protector” was her older brother, Luke, who protected her by making sure she was ‘safe’ on her ‘dates’ with older men.  Bobbie was reminded of her sex worker past, frequently, even as she transitioned from good-girl-gone-bad to bad-girl-turned-real-woman.  The most lasting reminder of Bobbie’s difficult time was the arrival of the daughter she conceived while working for Aunt Ruby.    Unfortuntately for Bobbie, daughter Carly came with an eye on vengence.
  • OLTL’s Todd Manning, in his youth, was anger on a stick and a threat to the safety of women everywhere.   The writers should have taken advantage of the fact that in a field of characters with unusual names (Storm, Ridge, Thorne, Destiny) naming this guy “Trouble” instead of Todd would have been more honest.  If there was a thing that Todd didn’t hate, it was only because it hadn’t been invented yet.  It’s hard to feel sorry for a unrepentent rapist and the writers knew it.  Without the need to try to ‘redeem’ him, the writers allowed the audience catch a glimpse of what was left of the humanity of the character.  The idea seemed to be to provide the audience some hope that whatever was left of his humanity was enought to stop him from victimizing others and to begin dealing  with his own pain.  Todd’s pain resulted from frequent beatings by an uncaring father who despised him.  Todd’s father, Peter Manning, was his maternal uncle and adoptive father.  He was forced to raise the child as his own.   We later found out that Todd was also sexually abused in his youth.
  • BnB’s Stephanie Douglas Forrester (who moved from my love-to-hate column to fully despise) was the product of a vicious wealthy father who presented the image of a perfect family to his business colleagues and friends (including fellow industry titan, YnR’s Katherine Chancellor).  What his friends and and colleagues didn’t know is that Mr. Douglas beat his daughter “Stevie” with reckless abandon behind closed doors.   Stephanie’s cruel childhood treatment was reportedly the cause of the cruelty she expressed in adulthood.  It is something that others around her struggle with until this day — clearly Stepahnie doesn’t struggle with her inhumanity toward others.  She revels in it.

You get the common thread, yes?  Years of emotional, physical, verbal, and sexual abuse.  Whether it happens because of a cowardly parent or a craven lover, there is typically a foundation for the abusive, shallow behavior we witness in our fave bad girls and boys.  Use that as a backdrop to try to understand the BnB’s Steffy Forrester.  She’s the heir to a massive fortune, her mother  came BACK from the dead and re-established the family Steffy always wanted. Her mother also gave her 25% of the family company – trusting her to “take care” of her older brother.  Steffywas raised by a father she adores.  She’s never had to go to college and yet was handed cushy executive level positions in the company after spending only a few months in the mailroom.  AND she had a stepmother who raised her and loved her while her mother was believed to have been in the grave (the same stepmother she still adored just a few years, ago, and with whom she’s had no significant conflict).   She’s traveled the world and has reportedly been loved and in love.

To hear this wanker of a character whine day in and day out about how sad she is, how much she needs a man (any man dating or married to a Logan woman), how hard her life is, how she’s been abandoned, maltreated, unloved… it’s all just too much.  Rather than creating feelings that run from exhilaration to exasperation, my feelings for Steffy run from damned bored to seriously annoyed.  Her rapid shifting from begging her daddy (Ridge) to staywith the family and continue to raise her, to begging her ‘big daddy’ (Bill Spencer) to stay with her for the night and make love to her is pathetic, but mostly jarring.  Is she a needy child or a sexually provocative woman?  She can’t be both, or use both “needs” as the foundation for her aggression toward the Logan family.  Her need to destroy the Logan family because her father loves Brooke, is petty.  It’s surreal at best when you consider how much she loved Brooke as a stepmother, until her nological mother’s return.  It’s absurd when you consider the fact that Brooke is the mother of her youngest brother. 

Steffy doesn’t work as a bad girl because there is no “empathy card” to be played for this character.  The character is made up of all hard angles.  It’s even hard to believe that she’s invested in the people she claims to be invested in. She’s now twice turned on her mother for love of  two different men (Rick Forrester and Bill Spencer).  She’s never bothered to share the stock in the family company with her brother.  She doesn’t care if her YOUNGEST brother (still in late childhood) grows up without a father – as long as their father is in the home she no longer lives in as an adult.  She’s been working to destroy her brother’s family since he was a toddler.  She fell to her knees over twin sister Phoebe’s death, but almost immediately fell into bed with the man her family blamed for her sister’s death.  She defended him even after he used her and used her sister’s death to taunt her father… the same father she can’t live without. 

 The fact that anyone (onscreen) finds her intriguing leaves one feeling dumbfounded.  Steffy Marone-Forrester is a character filled with contradictions, and none of them good. 

She is not likable.

She is not rootworthy.

She is not interesting.

My time is quickly becoming wasted by this character.  My sincere hope is that the writers are planning to give the character depth or to send her packing.  I will accept either, but what I can’t accept is Steffy in her current incarnation.   At some point the writers will  become bored with this character as she is.  I’m looking forward to THAT day.

Are The Bold and The Beautiful’s DAYS numbered?

I expect the prior week’s ratings to be TOUGH for the BnB when they’re released on Thursday/Friday of this week.  DAYS  has just ended a year long arc with Sami Brady finding out that Nicole Walker stole her child (Sydney) and replaced her with a child who ended up dying only months later (Grace).  I fully expect DAYS to kick Bold’s fanny in the next set of ratings.  If it doesn’t, shame on the viewers for missing one of daytime’s truly great moments!  Sami put the smackdown on Nicole, literally and figuratively, after finding out that Nicole stole her child – and Nicole turned it around and made herself a sympathetic character, in the end.

DAYS is amazing and Arianne Zuker is hitting it out the ballpark.   I don’t know who to credit for the success of this storyline.  Is it the writers who seemed to know how they wanted to tell this story from beginning to end?  There were no weak moments (other than the uninteresting teens – and even then the writers seemed to know not to give them too big a role in this storyline).  Does the credit go to Ari Z, whose every inflection, facial expression, and gesture seemed perfect?   Is it a strong  partnership between the two, one not working without the other?

The Bold and the Beautiful (only .2 of a ratings point ahead of DAYS)  hasn’t offered a storyline that comes even close to anything as exciting as the Sami and Nicole exchange.   While the BnB feels like the show you watch just before you go to sleep at night,  DAYS is the show you rush home to watch because missing a single day means you’ll miss something good!  If DAYS isn’t theEmmy winner for ‘Best Drama’ next year, I’ll be shocked.  The carefully choreographed dance between the writers at DAYS, and Ari Z is the perfect example of what writers can do with a show when writers write to the strength of their actors, instead of faulting good actors for bad storylines and awful direction (see: Kyle Lowder).

What the BnB lacks in terms of the  disciplined continuity shown by DAYS writers, it makes up for in sheer number of storylines directed at the audience.  Stephanie’s childhood abuse storyline ended as quickly as it began and then morphed into a storyline about her facilitating the rape of Brooke Logan.  Eric woke up out of his coma to find his wife in the arms of another man and all was forgiven mere weeks later.   Owen was a schemer (or appeared to be) when he first arrived on canvas – only to be transformed into a ‘hero’ just months later and transformed again as a toyboy-to-true love shortly after.  Brooke’s rape became a storyline about reclaiming the love of her life, only to have her nearly throw him away again with the birth of a child she never planned for (more on that later).   BnB storylines are  like the weather pattern in most places, wait ten minutes and they’ll change.  The Bold and The Beautiful needs a storyline arc that draws fans in and one that  lasts longer than a couple of months.  The ‘baby drama’ centered on Nick, Bridget, and Sandy/Agnes is the perfect opportunity for the writers to tell a cohesive storyline.  Right now the storyline is hit and run.  Pieces of it show up, when the writers aren’t busy shoving less interesting storylines (like Steffy going psycho stalker and creating an affair from a weak kiss – all in her head).

I think that BOLD’s Ashley Jones’ appeal is severely underestimated – mainly by the BOLD writers since prime time writers, directors, and casting agents ‘get it’, given Ms. Jones’ string of successes in prime time appearances.  Between Ashley Jones and Sarah Brown, the baby surrogacy storyline, added to the Logan/Forrester takeover,  has the potential to give fans a reason to become excited about the show.  SB’s Sandy  is clearly playing the Nicole Walker role, but are her intentions are as pure as Nicole’s?  It’s doubtful given Sandy’s fixation on the happy couple, the fact that they have everything, according to her, and that she has nothing.   Could she have been targeting Nick and Bridget all along?  Maybe it wasn’t her plan to become a surrogate, but that she’d planned to take advantage of Nick’s reputation as an unfaithful man.  The guy slept with Bridget’s mother and her dying aunt, after all.  How hard could it be to have him fall into bed with her?  That the happy couple needed a surrogate might have been a happy coincidence for her.  It would give her a chance to get closer to Nick, without Bridget needing to be around, and it set the stage for her making Bridget feel inadequate – or to at least try to.

Bridget has already suffered untold grief and misery and would be easily blindsided by someone like Sandy – but it shouldn’t take her long to see through Sandy and figure out what’s going on.  It would require a paradigm shift from the writers who would have to let go of bad habits.  By the time your husband humps your mother just months after your child dies, and jumps your dying aunt – being written as ‘naive’ only makes a character look stupid.   I’d rather not see that happen this time.  Why not have a cat and mouse storyline with the two women?  Why not add a new angle?  Sandy only THINKS she’s the cat.  It turns out that she’s the mouse and that Bridget relies on Sandy’s knowledge of ‘poor, pitiful, naive, betrayed, Bridget’ and plays to it… while working with her mother and mother-in-law, to make sure that Sandy doesn’t get her child – even if she takes her husband.   Maybe Bridget will prevail and win them both!  Is it even possible for the writers to have Nick keep his pants up when presented with the opportunity to cheat?  Let’s hope.

If you’re a BOLD viewer, I know what you’re most likely thinking?  The last BnB ‘baby drama’ story  (Brooke/Taylor surrogacy) didn’t work.  Fans were bored silly and the ratings dropped.  Why torture fans with another ‘baby drama’ storyline?  Why pick up with another ‘two mommies’ storyline?  The problem, in my opinion, wasn’t the type of storyline, but the players invovled!

The Brooke and taylor angle was wretched, because:

1 – taylor is a dud of a character and it would be easier cheering on a root canal than anything to do with her.  There are times when the writers need to realize that some characters really are damaged beyond repair, and cut bait.

2 – of fan fatigue with the rivalry.  It was tiresome watching Brooke dragged down into a storyline with taylor and Nick all over again.  Taylor has been at Brooke’s throat for over two decades, soap time.  They’ve battled over Ridge.  Both have loved Eric.  Both have bedded Thorne.  Each has referred to herself as the mother of the other’s children.  Both had bedded Nick and placed Bridget in the most uncomfortable of situations watching them move on with him while she still loved him.  By the time ‘Jack’ came along, the only fan response left was  ‘who cares?’

3 – the Brooke/nick link was DISGUSTING.  Given the death of Bridget’s child with Nick and the writers added insult to injury by having Bridget implant  Brooke’s fertilized egg into Taylor’s womb.   That’s a move that sounds good in the echo chamber of the writers’ room, but EGADS, wasn’t there a focus group to float that one by?  I can’t imagine anyone who wasn’t intimately connected with the show who loved it.

Moral of the story?  KISS!  (Keep it simple, silly!)  The DAYS baby swap/two mommies  storyline worked because it was interesting and  because it wasn’t clogged with too many agendas.  You didn’t get the feeling that the baby swap was just a prelude to something bigger, something worse – that the writers were committed to the storyline.  The BnB storyline, by comparison, was a fiasco.  The storyline appeared to be one more back door attempt to try to force fans to root for a Nick and Brooke pairing, a pairing that failed four times before.

In the appropriate writers’ hands, the Nicket storyline could help awaken this show.  Speaking for viewers like myself:  NO ONE gives a crap about taylor’s blind date. We’re SICK of Steffy’s desperation – and she is as equally damaged as Rick.  The Douglas “drama” puts me to sleep.   Give us more Nicket intrigue with Sandy and let us watch the Forresters fight their way back to the top, kicking Dollar Bill’s butt along the way! Let Ridge, Brooke, and Thorne take the lead on the big return.  Explain Felicia’s absence as having her tracing back  DB’s steps and digging up dirt on the guy.  After helping her family successfully reclaim the company, she and Dominic/Dino can visit Dante in Europe (until LK finishes her stint on ATWT).

When the Bold and the Beautiful is on, it’s ON.  When it’s not, it’s the most confusing show on daytime.  The inconsistency and character/plot shifting isn’t serving the show well.  I’m hoping there’s a time when the show will play to the strength of it’s  actors and rich history,  and do so consistently.  If DAYS does surpass the BnB in the ratings, who knows it will last?  DAYS has also had problems with past writing teams being inconsistent and confusing.  It’s hard to know who will ultimately prevail in this battle,  but given the richness of the BnB, it seems that the BnB has the edge. The writers just need to wake up and wake the rest of us up as well.

As an aside… DAYS writers?

When will you have Nicole wise up to the fact that the only real difference between EJ Dimera and Paul Walker  is that one is the devil with whom she shares DNA, and the other is the devil with whom she was willing to share her life?  Outside of that, the differences between the two men are minor.

Bold and Beautiful: The Lost Generation

A discussion began on a Bold and Beautiful board about Phoebe’s death, questioning why the writers decided to kill the character off.  Many of us have been asking the same question.  In the long run, there doesn’t seem to have been any real benefit to having the character destroyed.  There also doesn’t seem to be a formula for determining which characters are killed off in daytime and which live,  is there ever an objective assessment of what the long term impact is of killing off characters?

The ever stellar Lesli Kay’s Felicia was saved after ‘dying’ from stage 4 colon cancer.  Despite the improbable odds that Felicia could be saved and make a full recovery.  LK brought so much to the role of Felicia that her resurrection made sense.  It would have continued to make sense had  the writers then used the character or something other than window dressing for the rest of the  time she was onscreen.

Given the choice, I would have selected at least three or four other characters whose deaths would have better served the show than Phoebe’s death.  The only seeming long term effect of her death seems to have been the long term damage to a generation of  Logan-Forrester  legacy characters. The short term  fall out from the character’s death was marvelous!  Ridge tapped into emotions that even he didn’t know he had.   Brooke and Ridge were tested in a way that seemed to make it clear that they had whatever it took to survive any storm, even one as big as this – Rick is her son, but also Ridge’s his brother/nemeis and Phoebe is his daughter, Brooke’s beloved stepdaughter.  The writers then blew the BRidge relationship to soaphell (later recovering nicely).

The other short term event that played out nicely?  Rick had to face the fact that his hatred and spiteful behavior, contributed to Pheebs’ death. Even if he didn’t cause the accident he was responsible for the pain and anger she was feeling before she died.  It was tragic and poetic, but it went no where fast!  Rick became even more malevolent.  He became angrier and even more controlling and no one connected to feelings of guilt or anxiety linked to his role in Phoebe’s death.  Instead, Rick became a malignant narcissist and taunted his brother Ridge for his pain, he slept with Phoebe’s twin, informed Ridge that twin Steffy’s  ass was ‘his’, he stole from his family, and even told Ridge to say goodbye to his ‘other daughter’.  It would have been  a typical villain’ s act,  had the writers wanted us to view Rick as a villain.  BnB writers have a magnificent penchant for turning characters who would be villains in any other format into simply ‘misunderstood’ people (see Stephanie Forrester, who’s only counterpart is Hels Cassadine, GH).  Only, I consider it confusing and not so maginificent.

It would have been great for this to have been bratty Rick’s transformational moment and for him to have become a better person. I would have liked to have seen a complex, layered Rick struggle with wanting to support his mother, fight for HER happiness instead of her fighting for his – even with a man he couldn’t stand, and feeling troubled by the fact that supporting Brooke could hurt taylor and her brood. He could have been overwhelmed by the guilt of not wanting to cause them any more unhappiness. The guilt could have caused Rick psychological distress and he could have had some sort of genuine breakdown (a soapy approach to DID = multiple personality disorder? Depression and suicidal behavior? or A psychotic break?)

The storyline could have led to some sort of growth for taylor.  Instead of using Pheebs death to try to get back into Ridge’s bed, she could have had a crisis of faith. She could have become openly angry and vengeful and gas-lighted a psychologically frail Rick (rather than the passive manipulator she has always been). Who could blame her for hating him AND herself for letting Rick into their lives? It would make sense of her lie that Rick ‘took advantage’ of her. That lie would have become part of the game. She could have gone so dark that even satan’s handmaiden would have become afraid of her and the twist would have been watching Stephanie protecting Rick from taylor, for BOTH of their sakes.

Imagine, instead of Brooke and Ridge fighting over her protecting Rick, that they fought over Brooke trying to protect Rick from taylor!  Ridge would be too consumed with guilt to worry about whether taylor was actually setting Rick up to become even more divorced from reality and possibly setting Rick up to either hurt himself or at least institutionalized for the rest of his life. Even if he knew she was, his love for Broke would be in conflict for his desire to see revenge and he might let taylor continue on (not caring that she was being destroyed in the process). He wouldn’t help her, he just wouldn’t stop her.

A new woman would be cast for Rick to date many months after Pheebs died, but he would still have a hard time getting close to her because he would believe that he was undeserving of happiness. He’d end up seeing Pheebs dying every time he tried to get close to her. She’s the one would figure out hat taylor was setting Rick up and stop her. Rick would eventually recover, unable to hate taylor because of Pheebs

taylor would end up in the position she wanted to put Rick in and is institutionalized for the next 30 years – where soap time = real time!  Brilliant!

That’s what would have played out for me over the next year, instead of the pimping of Phoebe’s ghost for sex, the fighting between BRidge, Steph setting up her vulnerable son, Tommy boy bombing cars on public lots, Rick and Steffy having sex, and pretty much everything else that played out after she died.  Of the current generation of Logan-Forrester kids, only Bridget is left with the potential to be a heroine and likable.

I’m both excited by AJ’s Bridget being in an upcoming frontburner storyline with Sarah Joy Brown’s Sandy Sommers, and concerned.  The only BnB characters who can remain likable for long periods of time are often those the writers haven’t concentrated on.  With the spotlight on ‘Budge’, I’m going to have to count on Ashley Jones to navigate the character through disjointed dialogue, inconsistent plots, and the most improbable of situations.  Her Bridget is the last of her kind, the last likable character of her generation on Bold.

The Cougar and The Kitten

For as much as I’m enjoying the beastly behavior of the BnB’s new bad girl, Steffy Forrester, someone has to clue me in as to why Owen would even consider  fooling around with  Steffy and risk losing his wife for her.  Sure, she’s young, but what else does she have to offer?

She’s not well-educated.

She’s not interesting.

She’s not accomplished.

She’s certainly not bright.

The only thing she has to offer Owen is sex, and let’s face it, given Jackie’s past and varied experiences, she can rock Owen’s world forwards and backwards.  As for Steffy, seriously, what man REALLY wants to go there with a woman whose first sexual experience was with the man she use to call ‘Uncle’ until just a few years before she slept with him? To make matters worse, “Uncle Rick” was using her after having already slept with her mother and having tried to sleep with her twin before that.  What a catch Steffy would be!

The only thing that makes Steffy remotely interesting is her status as a third generation hypocrite.  She, like her mother and grandmother before her, has spent her time judging other ‘less worthy humans’ for their actions.  It was just a few short weeks ago that Steffy was pointing her crooked finger at Brooke and proclaiming her a certain kind of woman, one who didn’t respect other people’s families and relationships.  Oddly enough, she was sitting in judgment of Brooke while trying to break up Brooke’s family.  It’s a good thing for Jackie that she’s not married to a relative of Steffy’s… a least not a relative Steffy would be comfortable sleeping with, because familial relationships mean nothing on this soap and for Steffy intra-familial loving draws her like a moth to the flame.   If Jackie was married to a distant enough relative, there would be no stopping Ms. Steffy, who wouldn’t let go until she had him.  As it stands, she’ll probably grow bored of Owen by the time the newest ‘near relative’ hits town.

No matter where the writers take Jackie and Owen in the future, I want Jackie to at least have an early victory over smug homewrecking Steffy (wasn’t that what Steffy called Brooke, or how she thought of her?  Ah, sweet irony!)  I would like to see the ‘older woman’ win at least once.  Stephanie Forrester, for obvious reasons, never had that victory – but she was a different kind of woman.  She as filled with anger and vitriol.  She was cold and aloof, and had little time to return the love she was given — she was too fixated on her obsessions, most especially her Logan obsession.  Jackie is warm, and loving, and cares deeply and passionately for those she around her. That a woman like Jackie regardless of her age would lose out to a dim bulb like Steffy is almost inconceivable.

Jackie’s very existence is antithetical to that of Steffy’s.  Where Steffy still lives off the graces of her parents, Jackie controls an empire of her own making.  Where Steffy is maze dull, Jackie is a bright woman (who occasionally does dumb things – Deacon).  Steffy thinks the world revolves around her and her needs and desires.    Jackie can be misguided, but her focus is on what she believes she needs to do to make others happy.   Hands down, Jackie is the winner.  Steffy?  Not so much.

The sign of a doomed relationship

In the real world, the fact that ‘he’ is your uncle would be enough for anyone to realize that dating him is a really REALLY bad idea… for those who DON’T think of it as a bad idea? There are one of two explanations

1 – You’re waiting for a call from the ‘Springer’ show. Good luck as a headlining guest and remember: when the bell rings, you don’t HAVE to fight your sister just because she’s stolen your uncle boyfriend. Break the chain!

2 – You’re a soap character and as long as you can rule out a blood link with your hottie uncle, it’s all good!

If a familial relationship isn’t enough to end a relationship in the reel world, the fact that Mr. Wrong repeatedly brags to your father (his brother) about how hot the sex with you is, and how he’s using you to make your daddy angry, should be. The Bold and The Beautiful’s Steffy Forrester has GREAT hair… but it would be nice if there was something in her head besides hair follicles! What is the point of her becoming involved with Rick again, other than to prove that she’s crazy – and not good can’t-wait-to-see-what-she’ll-do-next crazy, either?

How do you know that the man you’re in love with, uncle or not, is WRONG for you? That’s EASY! When HE says:

Rick: (Sneers)

Ridge: All right… (Sighs) I’m all yours. What’s on your mind, Ricky boy?

Rick: Oh, nothing much, really. I just came here to give you these designs and to make you squirm a little bit more. It’s kind of becoming my favorite pastime.

Ridge: You got something to say, say it. I’m all ears.

Rick: I kind of feel bad for you. I mean, I’ve got your little girl wrapped around my finger, and it’s eating you alive. There’s just nothing you can do, kind of like there was nothing I could do when I was a kid growing up and you were hurting my mom over and over again, making her life a living hell. It’s payback time, Ridge. It’s time that you know how it feels, how I felt, watching someone I loved get tortured endlessly by a man who had no idea who in hell who he wanted to be with. Do you think your daughter would like a little torture, a little “naughty” torture in the bedroom, hmm? What do you think? I think it would drive her wild. Do you, too?

Ridge: Still that angry little boy, huh?

Rick: Oh, Ridge, this has nothing to do with anger. This is way beyond anger. I hate you. I hate you, and I have never hated anybody in my entire life.

Ridge: And you want to get back at me?

Rick: No, I want to put you in a psychological trap, like the one I was in when I was a kid and the one you’re in right now.

Ridge: Steffy’s gonna see right through you.

Rick: Oh, no, she won’t. Steffy is not your little girl anymore. I own her. Do you hear what I’m saying to you, Ridge? I own her. And there’s not a damn thing you can do to change that.

Ridge: Keep talking, Rick.

Rick: Oh, I will. You ain’t heard nothing yet.

And he continues with:

Ridge: You got more you want to lay on me, Ricky boy?

Rick: More? Hell, Ridge, I’m just gettin’ started. See, you need to understand that this is the changing of the guard. You’ve been the big man around here since you hit puberty– women falling at your feet, women swooning. “Ridge Almighty.” But not anymore, because your beautiful, sophisticated, smart little girl Steffy has fallen for me. (Laughs) How delicious is that? She worships me, Ridge. She would do anything for me, anything I ask. I may not have your rugged cheekbones, your award-winning smile, but I got it where it counts, and Steffy knows it.

Rick: (Chuckles) Ridge, can you believe this? The irony in this situation that–that Steffy has fallen madly in love with me of all people? And you hate me more than anybody else in this entire world. And I have Steffy eating out of my hands. And if you keep fighting us, if you make us miserable, I will take her the hell away from here, and you will never see her again.

Ridge: Oh, please, keep talking.

Rick: See, my marriage to Steffy– it’s not about two people in love. It’s about revenge. It’s about revenge for the years of pain that you have inflicted upon my mother and me. So when I’m saying my vows in your little destiny-westiny spot on the beach, I’m not even gonna be looking at my bride. I’m gonna be looking at you, poncho, and the pain etched in your face as you say “bye-bye” to another daughter.

Rick: Ugh, that arrogant look of yours– it just makes me sick.

Ridge: I’m arrogant?

Rick: You know, Ridge, I want to talk to you about something. See, I’m not– I’m not really happy with the way you treat the president of this company. Like, when I walk into a room, I don’t want you to say, “Oh, hey, little Ricky boy. How are you?” No, I want you to act like the president just walked into the room, ’cause you’re gonna treat me with respect. When I’m married to Steffy, I’m gonna be able to make her something that you’ve never been able to– a real Forrester, something that you have been pretending to be your entire life. Isn’t that right, “Marone”?

Ridge: Oh, don’t stop.

Rick: Oh, believe me, I’m not–

Ridge: Come on, you’re just getting wound up here.

Rick: Yeah, exactly.

Ridge: Keep going.

Rick: I’m not gonna stop. You ain’t ever gonna get me to shut up, Ridge. I’m gonna throw this in your face for the rest of your life. You’re gonna hear about us all the time. You’re gonna have a front row seat on holidays and–and–and birthdays and my favorite– my favorite– Valentine’s Day. I had an idea. You know what we should do? We should double date. You and my mom and Steffy and I, we could head up the coast. We can get two cabins right next to each other. I got to– I got to warn you, though. If my cabin’s a-rockin’, don’t come a-knockin’, ’cause you know what we’re gonna be doing? We’re gonna be making little Ridgies. I can see the steam comin’ out of your ears.

Ridge: (Sighs)

Rick: And the veins bulging in your neck. You want to punch me, don’t you? Go ahead. Hit me. Hit me! What’s wrong? You chicken? (Clucking) Come on, Ridge! What’s the matter with you? What, are you getting a little green in the gills? You comin’ down with something? You better not be. You need all the strength that you can get, ’cause you got to be able to walk your little daughter down the aisle on our wedding day. We’re gonna be one, big, happy family. And I can’t wait to put that ring on Steffy’s finger, ’cause then we can go off to the honeymoon, and that night is gonna be the greatest night of Steffy’s life… Dad.
