GH – Reconciliation

I realize, now, that I was far too dismissive of the big disaster episodes on General Hospital.  While I’m still not crazy about the special effects, or about GH writers ripping themselves off from prior disaster storyline, for as much as scenes like THIS annoyed me:

there were actually quite a few things to like about General Hospital over the last week or two.  When you wipe away the special effects, the mobsters being misplaced,  and take a look at the human interactions, some pretty significant stuff  happened.   (What’s wrong with the above scene? Sonny, standing in the middle of a group of women, all of whom he’s either slept with or impregnated?  Plenty!  I imagine a GH in which two or more women can stand in a room and NEITHER/NONE of them has slept with Sonny -or Jason, for that matter. Eh!  Another time.  That’s not the point of this blog entry).

The good stuff… RECONCILIATION, of sorts:

1.  Tracy and Edward Quartermaine.  I can only guess that their scenes were especially gratifying to veteran GH viewers.  Why?  Edward Quartermaine isn’t exactly what you’d call a warm and loving father. In fact, he’s not exactly the sort of man you’d call ‘father’, if you could help it.  He may be Tracy, Alan,  deceased Bradley Ward, and Jimmy Lee Holt’s  biological father, but that’s been about his only claim to his family. His children and grandchildren have always been property to him, pawns. They were a sign of his great empire, shaped to carry on his legacy, but not  ncessarily people he was capable of showing any sort of measurable love and affection toward.  Even more?

Tracy’s conflicts with Edward have been even more difficult than most father-daughter relationships in daytime.  A father may deny the paternity of his child, in daytime. He may even live his life without knowing he’s had children.  Daughter’s may grow up calling the wrong man papa, but rarely do they attemp to kill their fathers, biological or otherwise.  Tracy has.  She allowed Edward to suffer a heart attack, and as he lay dying – begging her to get his medication, she ignored his pleas.  Luckily, Edward faked the heart attack and was just testing Tracy.  Unlucky for her, she failed.

Sure, they’ve have warm moments since that time:

but nothing comes close to the scenes between the two we’ve witnessed this past week.  Tracy is Edward’s last livng link to his beloved Lila.  Despite everything they’ve been through, they are the last of the Q family in many ways.  Lila is long gone.  Granddaughter Emily passed away shortly after his son, Alan. Bradley is deceased.  Jimmy Lee Holt has moved on.  Grandsons Ned and Dillon are off in the winds, making their fortunes, and living non-Q lives.  What remains is Edward, Tracy, and daughter-in-law Monica.  It’s good to know that when push comes to shove, Edward will stand by his children, and his grandchildren, and all those he loves.  It was touching scene to watch, Edward wanting the daughter who was willing to take his life to survive.

2.  Edward and Carly being civil… another set of touching scenes and quite poignant when you think about their history.

Carly was always certain that the Qs, Edward most especially, were a threat to her son Michael.  She spent every waking moment thinking of how to keep Michael safe from Edward’s clutches and to prevent him from being turned into a Q/Eddie clone as his biological father AJ had willingingly become.

It’s ironic when you think about it.  Even if he was an Eddie Q clone, he wouldn’t be in a coma, right now, most likely.  He would be safe.  Carly first embraced Edward and welcomed his presence at Michael’s fundraiser.  She later showed him sympathy and concern as he worried and waited to learn the fate of his daughter and his daughter-in-law.

You have to wonder if the writers will ever allow Carly to spend time openly reflecting on how much better off Michael would have been had he been raised by the Qs.  Could she ever become part of their family again?  If AJ returned, in the midst of the hell Carly’s life has become dealing with Sonny and Jason and the dark drama that follows them both, would she be happy to see him?  Is there some part of her that would feel guilty that she hadn’t let him be a bigger part of Michael’s life?  It makes you wonder her unspoken regrets are the reason she’s been so determined to stay with Jax and to have Jax be Morgan’s father/father figure.

3.  Liz and Lucky.  While Liz and Lucky aren’t officially together, surely they’ll realize that no matter how much has happened between them, they have far too much history to be able to love anyone else as much as they love one another.  What’s always been true about this couple appears to be true, once again They’ve always been able to rely on one another more than they could anyone else – prior to Lucky’s addiction.

For the record, I’ve always liked Lucky and Sam. She gave him back his dignity, to some degree. Sam was able to see him in a way that Liz couldn’t after she’d talked herself into believing that Jason was the immoral (uh moral) majority and a good man who would never harm anyone, herself included, as Lucky had hurt her.  She’s right, Jason is not the unfaithful kind, just murderous and unrepentant – but that’s another story.  If Lucky and Sam were built on something more than rebounding, I’d  want them together for a very long time.  Lucky did as much for Sam as she’s done for him.  They were both able to see the good in one another that their respective partners wrote off.

Each has sought forgiveness for their betrayals of others.  Each has been horribly judged by those who have no right to judge them (something about glass houses, being without sin, casting first stones, and all that jazz).  Knowing that about  Sam and Lucky makes me wonder why I even want Lucky and Liz to get back together – other than the fact that the heart wants what it wants, and my heart wants the love and history that comes with this couple.  They make me remember a GH I use to enjoy, and it would be great to have a couple together without the mob worship that takes place on this show far too often. Liz and Lucky are ‘family’.  They always have been.

Now, if the writers would only do something about Jake’s paternity.  That kid just CAN’T be Jason’s… Let’s reconcile THAT issue, next.

4.  Luke with his past.  Something about Ethan tells me that Luke will have to face what kind of man he is, and was in his youth, yet again.  At least I hope that’s true, and this time  I want it to be an eye opening day of reckoning.    Ethan is a slick operator, as Luke once was.   I have to wonder how much longer Luke will find Ethan’s antics funny.  Ethan is clearly a liar, manipulator and user.  Like Edward Q, Luke has become a father in name only – which saddens me when you think of the life Luke and Laura created for Lulu and the ‘cowboy’.

Luke seems to be gravitating toward the young man who reminds him far too much of himself in his younger days.  I would have added his youner and more ‘reckless days’, but he’s still living the reckless part.  While his children were back in PC dealing with the toxic gas scare, where was Luke?  Having only just met Ethan, Luke has already found another reason to ignore the children who needed him, as well as not being there for Tracy.

There’s a part of me that wants Luke to learn the hard way what it’s like to love and trust a man like the self-indulgent Luke Spencer.  I want him to open his heart to his new “son” (symbolic? actual?) only to find himself being tossed aside, used, lied to, and generally ignored.  It would finally give him some idea of the lives his children and the women who’ve loved him  have led.

ABC: doing what it does best!

No one pulls a storyline out of their…. er… out of left field like ABC soaps!

All My Children – Betrayals come in threes!

I’ve never been in this situation before, so you’ll have to forgive me if this is no big deal and it’s all much ado about nothing, but is it common for a woman’s husband to donate sperm to impregnate her sister for the sake of allowing said sister and her partner to become parents?  What — the— ****?  My brother-in-law has helped me move before.  I forced him to take a gas card as compensation. That’s the ONLY exchange we’ve ever had.  It’s the ONLY exchange we’ll EVER have.  Soapgod love crazy soap characters!

I’m sure we’re supposed to think of Zach as having a HUGE heart and as being kind and loving toward Bianca.  The trouble is that his actions weren’t exactly kind and loving toward his wife.  Where, and at what point, was he going to tell Kendall?  As I understand it, the backstory is that he donated his DNA on an off screen European visit to his sister-in-law and her girlfriend, Reese, this past summer.   Neither Binks, nor Zach, thought it was important to share that bit of news?  What happens with Miranda and the new kid? Their fathers are/were brothers.  Does anyone plan to share that news with the kids?  Will Zach allow Miranda to believe that she is his father, too?  His children are double related all the way around.  New baby is the 1/2 sibling of Miranda, and a 1/2 sibling to his child with Kendall.  Kendall is Bianca’s 1/2 sibling.  Kendall is taking care of Ryan’s child Emma, and is the mother of his son, Spike (making Emma and Spike 1/2 sibs)

Clearly, I’m speaking only in terms on DNA.  Emotionally, they’re all connected and bonded as family, regardless of the DNA contributions. Maybe that answers my “what happens” question.  They’ll just all be one big happy family… but C’MON.  At least half of those kids are going to have to disappear, at some point, while new characters are brought to screen.  They won’t be able to date, otherwise.  The Lavery-Montgomery-Hart/Slater children are more than half of the child population of Pine Valley, now.  Methinks Zach will soon be wishing that the only thing he gave Bianca in Europe was a bouquet of flowers.  MEN!

Why wouldn’t Bianca and Reese find a donor in Europe?  Why not find a donor, and preferably not an in-law, from Reese’s family?  What kind of man are we to believe Zach to be, after this?  What kind of sister is Bianca?  In terms of sheer soap drama, this is DELICIOUS (oh yeah, ALL CAPS).  The question remains, who’s left standing at the end of this circle of betrayal?  Betrayed by her sister AND her husband, who had to know that she would have wanted to be in on this decision?  I don’t know what sort of woman comes back when Kendall wakes up, but I sure hope she’s the ass kicking kind, because this storyline makes it clear that there are a couple of asses in need of kicking, folks!

Speaking of betrayals, what would make Jesse believe that it was ok to marry Angie again, letting her believe he’d lived a solitary life without her, and only NOW tell her about his other “wife”and child?  Hey there writers, again, DELICIOUS, but our Jesse Hubbard was never a coward.  He would have told her right away.  Knowing that Laura Koffman is the role of “Rebecca” and that there will be fire works between the two women has me on the edge of my seat.  (Shame on you, OLTL, for not bringing LK back, yourselves!).  I’m planning to not miss a single moment of the Oct. 28th meeting.  NO!  I’m not anxious to see two women battle.  I’m hoping the fireworks sparked will include a fight about who gets first dibs joining Kendall in kicking boo-tay!  I’ve loved Jesse from the day the character aired, but he’s got it coming.  He not only left Angie and Frankie, but when he returned, he returned full of lies, deserting yet another family in the process.  Who does he think he is?  Adam Chandler?

Outside of AMC’s onscreen shenanigans, what do YOU think about the off screen news of Rebecca Budig leaving AMC?  After a much hyped return, it must be a huge blow to TPTB who heralded the return of the “REAL” Greenlee.  Since I enjoyed the recast and the depth Sabine Singh gave the character, I’m not exactly upset by the embarrassment TPTB must be feeling at this point.  I have only one request.   When Greenlee goes, have her take Annie and Ryan with her.  I would have asked that Babe, Krystal, and Kendall hit the bricks, too, but NOW?  Hell, I can’t wait for Kendall to wake up and find out what her husband and sister have done with her.  Babe is already gone and we got David back in her place (uh -YAY!), and Krystal and Erica going at it over Adam?  Ok, I’m intrigued!

General Hospital

Not for nuthin’ because I’ve already mentioned it, just briefly, but what’s the freakin’ deal with Olivia and Connie/Kate?  Did Connie-Kate ever warn Olivia that she was going to get back together with her father’s child?  Did she tell her cousin only after the accepted proposal and impending wedding?  So many levels of betrayal.    Connie-Kate betrays Olivia (who seems to not be as shaken up by it as she should have been).  Connie-Kate betrays Sonny by keeping Olivia’s secret.  Olivia betrays Sonny by keeping him from his child.  Olivia betrays her son (who won’t turn out to be Spinelli after all) by keeping his paternity from him.  Sonny betrays us all, leaving viewers to scratch their heads.  Fans  thought Sonny had only recently become lax with birth control.  It’s been a life long habit for the guy.  Who knew?

Sonny’s punishment for his inability to keep his pants zipped, and for being unable to protect the women who are foolish enough to love and trust him?  Yes, that’s right, Claudia  Zacharra… fitting.  How long before Claudia bears the man a child, too?

Fans aren’t disgusted by characters betraying one another, we look forward to it.  It only upsets us when the writers treat it as ‘no big deal’.  These people have been gazing into one another’s eyes, whispering sweet nothings (alternated by times of condemning and judging one another) — and lying all the while.  Well played, bitches, well played.  Writers? DO SOMETHING, make it count!

The way to this girl’s heart  is through her favorite soap character… or at least through halfway decent writing!  I was THRILLED, today, to hear Clint and Nora mention something they rarely talk about – their familial past.   It was such an organic moment and so perfect, that I watched it twice.  Given the closeness of Bo and Nora, I’ve never been able to really root for Clint and Nora,  but today I ‘got it’.  I realized what made them special.  There’s a realism with Clint and Nora that most other couples lack.

Some couples have to be heavily in love – hot and steaming just to sell themselves (nice try DAYS’ Ej and Sami – no sale).  Others have to be angry and bitterly fighting to prove their passion (yes, I’m talking about YOU GL’s Bill and Lizzie).  Clint and Nora just have to ‘be’.  When Nora asked Clint if he ever thought about why they were together, if they belong, if they were meant to be – his response floored me.  He said that since she is his ex sister-in-law, some would say they didn’t belong together at all.  I love when soaps acknowledge the ookyness that so many of us are feeling when they have siblings (or mothers-daugthers, fathers-sons) swap partners.

Yeah, I cried a little… ok, I would have under other circumstances, but you get the point.  It was such a sweet ‘us against the world’ moment that no matter what happens with Clint and Nora, I’ll always have that one perfect day with them.

Listen carefully, ATWT’s writers.  THAT’S how you write a mature romance.  This whole thing with Blondie/Jack/Janet just makes me want to pluck my eyes out with Katie’s chopsticks, I tell ya’!  In essence, Jack has reduced his ‘special’ time with Carly  to a good roll in the hay, something he can’t get over or stop wanting.  They have a ‘chemical attraction’ says the mighty Jack(ass)   I thought I was being too harsh on Jack, yesterday.  NOW?  I realize that I’ve given him TOO much credit all along. Carly loves that pinhead with her whole heart.  She wants Jack even when she can’t be with him physically.  My entire gripe about Jack  has been that when he’s in pursuit of another woman, he reduces Carly and his time with her to almost nothing.  Today, he’s outdone himself.

Oh, and who didn’t see the mugging coming a mile away?  Guilt guilt guilt…Jack will work even harder to make Janet happy — while sneaking off for ‘chemistry lessons’ with Carly. Janet doesn’t want to be Jack’s consolation prize, but dear writers, I’m starting to feel as if Janet is OUR consolation prize.  I’d rather see more of a focus on CARLY’s happiness and having her finally have a place where she feels she belongs, with someone who finally and truly loves her.  Janet?  Not so much.  I still just don’t care.

You’ve at least made up for shoving Janet at fans by giving us Henry and Vienna, Katie and Brad.  We even got to see Bob and Kim (even if it was under pretty sad circumstances).  Letting Chris Hughes go?  What are you THINKING, PTB? That dude had ‘walking fantasy’ written all over him (at least, that’s what the sash he’s wearing says when he’s in MY dreams).

Speaking of dreams,  GH left me pinching myself to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.  Lainey LIVES!  She’s so rarely seen that I’m always thrilled when there are any Lainey sightings on deck.  I still mourn for the loss of Justice Ward when I see her, and wonder why the writers no only ended his short life the way they did, but then treated his relationship with Lainey as ‘no big thing’.  It was so sad to hear her say that she wasn’t really close to Justice, but that she still felt bad about his death.  OUCH!

Oh, and excuse me, but was that REALLY Maxie showing genuine sympathy towards Lulu, and willing to taking on psychopathic papa Zacchara to help Lulu out?  Not only has Kirsten Storms made Maxie HER character with her interpretation of who Maxie Jones-Scorpio is and should be, she’s given the character such a wonderfully sharp edge.  I don’t mind seeing that edge occasionally softened.  Today, I didn’t know who to feel sorrier for, Lulu or Maxie.  Maxie stopped caring about anyone other than herself long ago.  She seemed almost as lost as Lulu.

To see her give a damn about Lulu’s condition, enough to take on old man Zacchara in order to make sure that Lulu could see Johnny, gave me hope for the character. It gave me hope that the writers would continue down the path of creating a multi-layered ingenue fans would come to appreciate for years to come.  Well done, Kirsten, well done!  Oh, and Maxie’s new look, the mini-Kate Howard look, is working for her.

Katie/Connie is going to need Maxie’s adoration by the time Sonny finds out that she lied about his child and has been keeping Olivia’s secret this entire time.  Someone set up the barware, it’s time for Sonny to start smashing things!

How interesting that Katie/Connie places such a high premium on honesty… and has been able to look Sonny in the eye this entire time, knowing the secret she’s kept from him.  I can’t wait! Should we place bets on whether Carly finds out before anyone else and torments Katie/Connie and Olivia?  Are we taking bets on whether the earlier rumors are true and Spinelli is Sonny’s long lost son, after all?
